A story about a woman who received a bizarre message from an ex-boyfriend — demanding she pay him the difference in gold prices on a couple's ring he bought two years ago — has gone viral online.
A woman identified only as A posted her story on the social media platform Threads, saying she had received a startling message from her former boyfriend.
"My ex-boyfriend from two years ago reached out to me — is this even normal?" she wrote, recalling that the two had once bought matching couple's rings together.
A said that at the time she was a student while her ex had a job, so she initially suggested silver rings to keep costs down. He insisted they go with gold, saying, "If we're getting them anyway, let's just get gold."
The couple later broke up. When they did, A offered to return the ring, but her ex told her it was not worth much and that she could just sell it.
Two years later, he got back in touch.
According to the conversation she shared, her ex asked whether she still had the ring. When she replied, "I sold it ages ago — you said I didn't have to give it back," he responded: "That was then, but gold prices have doubled since. I'm the one who bought that ring, so can you pay me the difference?"
A said she was at a loss for words. "He contacted me again on Thursday saying gold prices have gone up since then and I should pay him the increase," she wrote. "I'm so dumbfounded I don't even know what to say."
Online commenters reacted with disbelief. "Unbelievable," wrote one. "What kind of nonsense is it to settle a gold investment with an ex?" said another. Others questioned his logic — "Shouldn't the price at the time of purchase be the baseline?" — while some were blunter: "Does money just wipe out all sense of dignity?"
