A story about a husband who secretly photographed his heavily pregnant wife and shared the image in a group chat with friends to mock her has sparked widespread outrage online.
A post titled "I accidentally saw my husband's group chat" recently appeared on the online community forum Nate Pann.
The author, identified only as A, described herself as a woman in her mid-30s in her second year of marriage and nearing her due date. She said she had stumbled upon a shocking exchange on her husband's phone.
According to A, her appetite had increased significantly during the pregnancy, causing her to gain nearly 17 kilograms. The rapid change in her body left her feeling ashamed every time she looked in the mirror. She said she had fallen into depression and, at times, snapped at her husband out of irritability.
Her husband, she said, had taken it all without complaint. He had cried the first time he saw an ultrasound image, regularly stroked her belly and told her she was doing great and that she looked beautiful — the picture of a caring partner.
But she was left shaken after recently coming across a group chat on his phone with college friends.
When one friend asked how his wife was doing, the husband secretly photographed A as she slept at home and posted the image in the chat. "Don't even ask," he wrote. "She just rolls around. I feel like I'm raising a pig."
He went on to demean her further, writing that she had been slim before marriage but had done nothing but eat under the pretense of being pregnant, and that he had lost all affection for her. His friends, rather than pushing back, laughed along and chimed in: "If she doesn't lose the weight after giving birth, it'll stick for good. Watch out."
Confronted with this side of her husband, A said she was horrified and heartbroken. "The person who acted like an angel to my face was talking about me like that behind my back," she wrote. "My self-esteem has been completely destroyed. I feel like I want to die."
"When I saw his face, I couldn't say a word — I just went to my room and cried alone," she added. "I look at mothers who manage to stay in shape and feel nothing but envy. I'm just here feeling sorry for myself."
Readers who came across the post reacted with a range of comments. "This makes me question his character," wrote one. "Screenshot the chat and keep it as evidence," advised another. Others said the husband's behavior had subjected his wife to the worst possible environment during her pregnancy.
