Man in his 50s beats elderly stranger in parking garage, cites envy over imported car

A man in his 50s assaulted a stranger in his 70s over a parking dispute, later telling the victim's family he had acted out of envy and resentment toward people who drive imported cars.

JTBC's crime affairs program "Sageon Banjang" recently aired the account of victim A, a man in his 70s who said he was beaten without provocation in a below-ground parking garage.

According to A, the incident began May 29 when he visited a shop run by his son and got into a parking dispute with a man in his 50s, identified as B, in the underground garage.

A immediately offered to repark his vehicle, but B responded with a torrent of abuse — "Move it fast, before I kill you" and "What are you wearing, you look like a thug" — before punching and kicking A repeatedly.

During the assault, B made repeated references to A's car, shouting phrases such as "You think you're above everyone just because you drive a foreign car?" and "Guys with foreign cars drive like idiots — I can't stand them," according to the report.

When A's son came down to the garage, B told him: "I'm a bus driver and I have a chip on my shoulder about foreign cars. My car is cheap, and when I see people driving imported cars I feel envious — I wanted to kill them."

Bystanders eventually stepped in and stopped the attack. A reported B to police, but B told investigators that A had grabbed him by the collar first, claiming the violence was mutual.

A has been diagnosed with injuries requiring three weeks of treatment.

Attorney Park Ji-hoon, who reviewed the case, said the mutual-assault claim could itself constitute false accusation given that video footage of the attack exists. "The motive makes no sense, and you can see the victim just taking blow after blow without even trying to defend himself," Park said. "Looking at it all together, there is a real possibility of a heavy sentence."
