Yeongdeungpo-gu Completes Overhaul of 106 Street Name Signs Ahead of Summer Storm Season

Yeongdeungpo-gu has completed a comprehensive inspection and overhaul of address information facilities across the district, ahead of the summer storm season, to prevent safety accidents and improve navigation for residents and visitors.

The district conducted a full survey of 29,477 address information facilities — including street name signs, building number plates and object address signs — beginning earlier this year. Officials checked each facility's installation condition and assessed damage, repairing aging infrastructure while adding supplementary street name signs in areas where navigation is difficult, such as alleyways, back roads and intersections.

The overhaul was carried out as a preemptive measure to prevent accidents — such as signs falling — caused by strong winds and heavy rain during the summer months.

The district also improved the visibility of facilities so that address information can be easily read during heavy rain or at night, and expanded pedestrian-height street name signs to further enhance wayfinding convenience.

Alongside this, the district has continued ongoing maintenance of address information facilities. In March, it repaired 4,334 aging building number plates in the Mullae-dong and Yeongdeungpo-dong areas, improving visibility in residential neighborhoods.

The upgrades are expected to enable accurate location identification during flood-related disasters — such as inundation, isolation or building damage — allowing for faster emergency reporting and rescue operations, and contributing to overall resident safety.

"Address information facilities are a critical piece of urban infrastructure directly tied not only to residents' everyday convenience but also to their safety," Yeongdeungpo-gu District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon said. "We urge residents to actively report any damaged facilities to the district office when they spot them."
