The Korea Magazine Association, led by President Baek Dong-min, is accepting submissions for its annual Magazine Media Content Contest through Sept. 30. The event aims to spread a culture of magazine readership and broaden public engagement with the medium.
Now in its 19th edition, the contest is organized by the Korea Magazine Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Press Foundation, the National Library of Korea, the National Assembly Library and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It was designed to highlight magazines as a cornerstone of Korean cultural life and to invite the public to rediscover their value through creative participation.
This year's contest is open to anyone — individuals or teams — who loves magazines, and covers five categories: writing, comics, illustration, video and photography. Entries may draw on a wide range of magazine-related themes, including stories of personal influence from a magazine, recommendations of a favorite title, accounts of everyday life with magazines, articles one would write as a magazine journalist, concepts for an original magazine, or scenes depicting life alongside magazines.
Participants can download the application form and submission template from the notices section of the KMA website. The deadline is Sept. 30, and results will be announced on the website and communicated to participants individually in mid-October.
Prize money will be awarded across eight categories. The grand prize, presented under the name of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, carries 3 million won (about $1,940). The top prize and excellence prize, both bearing the KMA president's name, offer 2 million won and 1 million won respectively. Four special prizes — from the Korea Press Foundation, the National Assembly Library, the National Library of Korea and the Seoul Metropolitan Government — each carry 1 million won. Five encouragement prizes of 300,000 won each will also be awarded under the KMA president's name.
The KMA was founded on Oct. 26, 1962, with the goals of promoting a healthy magazine press, preserving Korean cultural heritage and advancing the domestic magazine industry, as well as fostering fellowship among magazine professionals. Its core activities include support for high-quality magazine content development and distribution, magazine content exports, the annual content contest, the Korea Magazine Fund, and affiliated institutions such as the Korea Magazine Museum, the Korea Magazine Education Institute, the Korea Media Policy Research Institute and the Korea Magazine Copyright Management Office.
