Sales of a Seven-Eleven snack that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang handed out during his visit to South Korea have surged.
Sales of the convenience store chain's private-label product "Seven Select Honey Banana Flavor HBM Chip" jumped roughly eightfold — up 704 percent — on June 6 and 7 compared with the same days a week earlier, Seven-Eleven said Monday. Searches for the snack on the Seven-Eleven mobile app also rose 160-fold over the same period.
On Thursday, Huang joined SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and Naver board chairman Lee Hae-jin for a samgyeopsal dinner at a restaurant called "Hyeongnim Jeoyo" near Hongik University Station in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Huang afterward gave the snacks to passersby and opened a bag on the spot to eat some himself. SK Group prepared the snacks to mark the occasion.
The Seven Select Honey Banana Flavor HBM Chip is a product Seven-Eleven developed in collaboration with SK Hynix. The name plays on the initials of "Honey Banana Mat Chips" — the Korean words for the flavor — while also evoking HBM, the AI memory chip technology in which SK Hynix leads the global market, and the semiconductor industry's ubiquitous term "chip."
