Sunjin advances green management across livestock food value chain

Sunjin, a livestock food company, is drawing attention for leading eco-friendly management across its entire value chain — spanning feed, hog farming, meat retail and meat processing.

Sunjin has introduced packaging materials incorporating eco-friendly green technology for its meat and processed meat products. The company has also expanded the use of eco-friendly materials in ice packs, cutting annual gel consumption by roughly 57,600 units, or 8,460 liters. It is also reducing unnecessary excessive packaging and using recyclable packaging materials and reusable cold packs.

Its feed production factories operate dust collection systems and air emission prevention facilities to minimize environmental impact during production and packaging. Low-NOx burners have been installed in boiler systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

The meat processing division has similarly strengthened site-level environmental management by operating wastewater treatment plants and air pollution prevention facilities, and by providing legally mandated environmental technology education to on-site personnel.

In hog farming, the company is building a sustainable livestock model through farm environment improvements. Jeil Jonchuk, one of its representative farms, has installed air purification systems, wastewater treatment systems, composting systems and rooftop solar panels on its hog houses to reduce odor, pollution and wastewater problems.

Sunjin affiliate SETI, an integrated environmental solutions company, treats odor and manure as core challenges the livestock industry must address. It provides end-to-end solutions covering the operation, diagnosis, design, construction and post-management of manure treatment facilities.

SETI also offers solutions that convert wastewater and waste into resources, including reclaimed water use, liquid fertilizer circulation, heating and cooling air recirculation, and solid fuel production. The company has recently moved into developing environmental solutions that link resource circulation with energy use, contributing to the creation of a sustainable livestock food environment.

Sunjin is also strengthening its ESG governance. The company operates an ESG committee within its board of directors to advance sustainable management and review ESG activities, while continuing to upgrade its overall sustainability framework. It has received an integrated A rating for two consecutive years in ESG assessments published by the Korea Corporate Governance Service.

"Sustainable livestock farming cannot be achieved at any single point — whether on the farm, at the production factory, in retail or at the consumer level," a Sunjin official said. "Sunjin will reduce the environmental burden across the entire livestock food value chain and, through specialized solutions like SETI, resolve environmental challenges on the ground to build the foundation for the future of the livestock industry."
