Man arrested for secretly filming woman at Jamsil ballot-counting protest

A man has been arrested on suspicion of illegally filming a woman at a protest outside a ballot-counting station in Jamsil, where demonstrators have gathered to denounce a ballot shortage during the June 3 local elections.

The Seoul Songpa Police Station said Monday it arrested the man, identified only by the surname initial A, on charges of illegal filming under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

A is accused of secretly filming a woman's body near the ballot-counting station at Olympic Park in Songpa-gu, Seoul, that afternoon.

Police said they are investigating the specific motive and circumstances of the alleged offense.

Protests have continued since June 5 near the handball arena at Olympic Park, with demonstrators rallying against a ballot shortage that occurred at Polling Station No. 2 in Jamsil 7-dong, Songpa-gu, during the June 3 local elections.

Now in their fifth day, the protests have been marked by mounting tensions and disorder. The previous day, demonstrators blocked members of the women's youth handball national team who had come to collect training equipment, demanding they show game footage to verify their identities.

In a separate incident, a group of about 20 protesters surrounded a Taiwanese journalist who was livestreaming in Chinese, suspecting the reporter of being a disguised operative and pressing the journalist to reveal their identity.
