Agency adopts new personal data protection policy
Security checks to be strengthened as cloud use, remote work expand
'SME technology data is a core national asset'
The Korea Institute of Startup and IT Promotion said Tuesday it is stepping up organization-wide information security and personal data protection to safeguard the technology and personal information of small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies.
The agency carries out technology innovation and smart manufacturing support projects for small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies. It said stronger internal security is necessary given that it handles corporate technology data and personal information throughout its research and development, smart factory and technology commercialization support work.
The agency recently sent a letter signed by its president to all staff, stressing the importance of information security. The letter was intended to remind employees of the value of personal data protection and to build a security culture centered on prevention rather than post-incident response.
In the letter, KISED President Kim Young-shin said, "The data and technology information we manage represent the precious sweat of small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies who work day and night — and they are the core assets that will determine the nation's future." He added that information security and personal data protection "go beyond regulatory compliance and are essential values for an agency that leads innovation."
Alongside this, the agency formally established and announced a new Personal Data Protection Management Policy. The policy covers compliance with laws and guidelines, prohibition of use beyond stated purposes, measures to ensure data safety, protection of data subjects' rights, responsible management and a culture of awareness, and prevention of harm and rapid response.
KISED said it plans to upgrade its information security infrastructure following the policy announcement. It will also continuously strengthen security education and inspections for all staff in line with changing work practices, including the expansion of cloud environments and remote work.
