Gallery Joeun in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, is hosting a solo exhibition by Maiko Kobayashi, "Songs Echo Memories," through July 4. The exhibition brings together works from the artist's long-running "Liminal Creatures" series alongside new paintings that explore the relationships among music, memory and emotion.
Kobayashi has spent more than two decades painting beings that blend human and animal elements. The creatures she calls "liminal creatures" evoke a layered emotional world that goes beyond simple cuteness — one where fragility, loneliness and warmth coexist.
In this exhibition, Kobayashi translates into paint the echoes of memory and feeling that everyday music stirs within her. Fragments of memory summoned by melody and rhythm intertwine with the figures on her canvases, delicately mapping an inner landscape where opposing emotions — love and sorrow, anxiety and hope — exist at the same time.
