Actor Nana calls burglar's appeal a 'waste of time' after he contests 7-year sentence

Actor Nana, born Im Jin-ah, 35, a former member of K-pop group After School, expressed frustration after the man convicted of breaking into her home and robbing her at knifepoint appealed his seven-year prison sentence.

According to the Namyangju Branch of Uijeongbu District Court, the defendant, identified only by his surname Kim, filed an appeal Monday against the first-instance ruling that sentenced him to seven years in prison on charges including robbery causing bodily harm.

After news of the appeal broke, Nana shared a screenshot of the report on her social media, posting clapping emojis alongside the captions "waste of time" and "can only laugh," then added "fighting" — a Korean expression of encouragement used here with evident sarcasm.

Kim was indicted on charges of breaking into Nana's residence in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, at around 6 a.m. on Nov. 15 last year, threatening Nana and her mother with a weapon and attempting to extort money from them.

Criminal Division 1 of the court, presided over by Judge Kim Guk-sik, handed down the seven-year sentence on June 9.

The court said in its sentencing rationale that the defendant "broke into the victims' home at night — a time when absolute peace must be preserved — while armed with a weapon," adding that "punishment commensurate with the gravity and seriousness of the crime is unavoidable."

The court ruled that injuries Nana inflicted on the defendant constituted self-defense. "It is reasonable to conclude that the victim swung her fists and a weapon to avoid serious harm or to protect her family, and that the defendant was aware he would face such resistance," the court said.
