'Colony' hits 5 million admissions, signaling strong long-term run

"Colony," the zombie suspense film starring Jun Ji-hyun and Koo Kyo-hwan, has crossed the 5 million admissions mark.

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated box office system, "Colony" had drawn a cumulative audience of 5,007,673 as of Saturday morning — reaching the milestone just 24 days after its opening.

The film had already set this year's fastest records at every benchmark from 1 million through 4 million admissions, rewriting the mark at each stage. Now in its fourth week of release, "Colony" has cleared yet another threshold, pointing to a sustained run at the box office.

"Colony" is director Yeon Sang-ho's latest zombie film, following "Train to Busan" (2016) and "Peninsula" (2020). The story centers on survivors trapped inside a sealed building during a mysterious outbreak, fighting to stay alive against infected who evolve in increasingly unpredictable ways.

Jun Ji-hyun plays Kwon Se-jeong, a biology professor who leads the survivor group, while Koo Kyo-hwan portrays Seo Young-cheol, the man behind the outbreak.

The film had its world premiere earlier this year in the Midnight Screenings section of the 79th Cannes International Film Festival.
