Disney's live-action 'Moana' set for July opening

The live-action adaptation of Disney's animated film "Moana," which grossed $1.7 billion worldwide, has confirmed a July opening.

Walt Disney Company Korea announced Monday that "Moana" will open July 8.

The film follows Moana, a young girl chosen by the ocean, who sets sail into uncharted waters alongside legendary hero Maui to save her island from a curse.

A live-action reimagining of the 56th Disney animated feature "Moana" (2016), the film has drawn strong anticipation from Disney fans thanks to its closely matched casting — Dwayne Johnson as Maui and Catherine Laga'aia as Moana.

Thomas Kail, who directed the musical "Hamilton" — which swept 11 awards at the 70th Tony Awards in 2016 — helms the film. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who composed the soundtrack including "How Far I'll Go," serves as producer.

A new poster unveiled alongside the release date announcement, titled "A New Voyage," shows Moana, Maui, Pua and Hei Hei setting out on a fresh journey against a sweeping ocean backdrop. The tagline "This summer, the ocean you've dreamed of comes to life," paired with the determined expressions of Moana and Maui standing aboard their vessel, builds anticipation for the adventure ahead.
