Actor Shim Eun-woo reveals breast tumor removal surgery: 'Please get regular ultrasounds'

Actor Shim Eun-woo has revealed she underwent surgery to remove a benign breast tumor and is now recovering.

On Saturday, Shim shared a video documenting the procedure on her YouTube channel "Maeum Shim Eun-woo."

"During a health checkup in April, I was advised to see a breast surgeon and underwent further testing," she said. "A lump with an irregular shape was found in my left breast, and I had a biopsy done — fortunately, it turned out to be benign, not malignant."

Shim said she was told that even benign lumps may be recommended for removal if they show signs of overgrowth or have an irregular shape, which led her to undergo a Mammotome procedure. The Mammotome technique removes tumors by suction through a specialized needle without any incision.

The surgery was completed in about 20 minutes under general anesthesia. During a phone call with her mother, Shim noticed her mother was in tears and reassured her family, saying, "Anyone watching would think I had major surgery."

In the video's description, Shim wrote that it was her first time under general anesthesia and her first six-hour hospital stay, adding that she had been nervous but came through without any problems and was now recovering well. "I'm grateful the tumor was caught and removed through a breast ultrasound during a routine checkup before it could grow any larger," she said, urging women to get regular breast ultrasound screenings.

Meanwhile, Shim was caught up in school bullying allegations in 2021 but resumed her career in March last year after stating that evidence had emerged during the investigation showing she was not the perpetrator. She currently engages with the public through YouTube and stage theater.
