US Treasury chief grants 60-day Iran oil waiver, contingent on IAEA inspections resuming

The United States said it will temporarily lift sanctions on Iranian oil production, sales and delivery for 60 days.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Sunday on X, formerly Twitter, that all previously prohibited transactions involving Iranian oil would be permitted until 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Aug. 21.

Bessent cited two conditions for the waiver: Iran's pledge to guarantee "free and open navigation" through the Strait of Hormuz, and its agreement to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to re-enter the country.

Vice President JD Vance, who held the first follow-up negotiations with Iran after the two sides signed a cease-fire memorandum of understanding, told reporters Sunday that "Iran has agreed to reinvite the IAEA inspection team back into their country." He called it "an important moment for the American people and a first step toward permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending Iran's nuclear weapons program."

The nuclear inspection team is expected to begin operations this week.

Vance said the two sides had reached agreement on the IAEA inspectors' return to Iran this week, as Washington and Tehran continue follow-up talks following their cease-fire MOU.
