American man who punched 2 USFK soldiers says he was 'disrespected'

A man in his 30s with American citizenship was arrested after assaulting two US Forces Korea soldiers on a street in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, while intoxicated.

The Pyeongtaek Police Station said it has booked the man, identified only as A, on assault charges and is investigating the case.

A is accused of punching two USFK soldiers, both men in their 20s, once each on a street in Sinjang-dong, Pyeongtaek, at around 6 a.m. on June 21 while drunk.

Officers who responded to a report of the incident arrested A at the scene.

The case drew wide attention after footage of the assault spread on social media.

In the video, a large-framed suspect kicks and punches a man wearing a black shirt.

When the suspect then tries to grab a foreign woman nearby, another man in a blue shirt steps in to stop him — only to be punched by the suspect and left unable to get up for some time.

A, who was not acquainted with the victims, told police he attacked them because they had ignored him and hurled insults at him on the street, according to investigators.

He is a US citizen who has been living in South Korea for an extended period, police confirmed.

Police are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of the incident by questioning both the suspect and the victims.
