Gangnam National Music Orchestra makes its debut at Gangnam Theater on Wednesday, bringing traditional gugak into a new tourism and cultural content platform
Gangnam-gu held the inaugural ceremony of the Gangnam National Music Orchestra at Gangnam Theater on Wednesday, marking the first time any autonomous district in Seoul has established such an ensemble. District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong presided over the launch as the orchestra began its official activities.
Operated by the Gangnam Cultural Foundation, the orchestra comprises 20 young musicians aged 39 and under. The ensemble spans seven instrumental sections — gayageum, geomungo, daegeum, piri, haegeum, ajaeng and percussion — and delivered a debut performance blending the depth of traditional Korean music with a contemporary sensibility.
The district plans to grow the orchestra into a signature Gangnam cultural offering for both residents and tourists, staging regular and special performances as well as outreach concerts at key cultural and tourism landmarks including Coex, Gangnam Square and Seonjeongneung.
