Yoo Ji-hyung, screenwriter of 'Hollywood Kid's Life,' dies at 78

Yoo Ji-hyung, a veteran Chungmuro filmmaker who wrote the screenplay for director Jeong Ji-young's "Hollywood Kid's Life" (1994), died June 23. He was 78.

Born in 1948, Yoo entered the film industry in 1969. After working in the directing department on Chungmuro productions, he made his screenwriting debut in 1981 with the script for director Kim Won-du's "Yeonbunhong Chima."

He went on to write more than 50 screenplays, including "Yeongja's Heyday 2" (1982), "The Wandering Singer Who Came Last Year" (1985), "Sandalgi 4" (1991), "Teenage Rebellion" (1991) and "Geumhong-a Geumhong-a" (1995).

In 1987, Yoo made his directorial debut with "Dyohwa," starring Kang Su-yeon and Lee Dae-geun. He later directed "Sara Is Guilty" (1993), based on a novel of the same name.

Yoo also left behind written records documenting some of the most important directors in Korean film history.

In 2005, drawing on his experience as an assistant director under Lee Man-hee, he published "Film Director Lee Man-hee," a book chronicling the director's cinematic life. The following year, he released "24 Years of Conversation," a collection of interviews with director Kim Ki-young.

A memorial altar has been set up at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital's funeral hall. The funeral procession is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.
