The transition committee for Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province's ninth elected administration, led by governor-elect Woo Sang-ho, denied Thursday that it plans to scrap the new provincial office building project — a construction that held its completion ceremony in the final stretch of outgoing Gov. Kim Jin-tae's term.
"Governor-elect Woo's position remains unchanged: he will maintain the policy of building the new office building in the interest of administrative continuity and stability," the transition committee said. "However, as the governor-elect has stated publicly on multiple occasions, he is carefully reviewing the pace at which the project moves forward, taking into comprehensive consideration the province's fiscal situation and the impact on residents' livelihoods."
According to the governor-elect's office, the transition committee has no intention of reopening the project from scratch or halting it altogether. Rather, given the scale of the undertaking and the public funds involved, the committee said it aims to find a more rational and responsible path forward — one that secures fiscal soundness and minimizes the burden on Gangwon residents.
