World Cup casting debut: Jeon Hyun-moo vows 'we'll beat South Africa and march to LA'

Broadcaster Jeon Hyun-moo cheered on South Korea's national football team ahead of their World Cup group-stage match against South Africa — and his own debut as a sports play-by-play announcer.

Jeon posted photos from the broadcast venue on his social media Thursday, writing: "We will absolutely beat South Africa and head to LA. No draws — let's go for a big win." He also wrote, "The World Cup is on KBS."

The photos show Jeon alongside commentator Lee Young-pyo, with whom he will share the broadcast booth. The two are seated side by side in front of a South Korean flag, their determined expressions catching the eye.

Jeon will take the microphone as play-by-play announcer for South Korea's final Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Korea time at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico. He and Lee will call the match live on KBS 2TV.

It marks the first time Jeon, a former KBS announcer turned broadcaster, has handled a sports broadcast.

He had earlier drawn attention for his passion for the role by practicing his commentary on the KBS variety show "Boss in the Mirror" whenever the opportunity arose.
