Scenarios fall apart one by one as Korea's round-of-32 odds drop sharply; fate hinges on remaining weekend matches
Every scenario South Korea had been counting on collapsed Friday, as Group E, F and D matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a string of worst-case results. Ecuador — widely expected to be eliminated — stunned Group E leader Germany with a comeback victory to clinch a round-of-32 berth. Sweden drew with Japan in Group F, and Australia and Paraguay played to a draw in Group D, with both sides advancing to the knockout stage.
In the wild-card race — where the top eight third-place finishers across all 12 groups advance — only two teams now sit below South Korea in the standings. The situation has become truly dire.
South Korea's outlook for reaching the round of 32 is darkening. According to statistics firm Opta and sports outlet The Athletic, Korea's advancement probability, which had been close to 90 percent even after Thursday's match against South Africa, has since fallen to between 50 and 60 percent. As of Friday afternoon, Opta's supercomputer put Korea's round-of-32 odds at just 54 percent.
South Korea stands at one win and two losses, with three points and a goal difference of minus-1 — sixth among all third-place teams. Several teams that have yet to play their final group matches still sit below Korea, meaning the side could be pushed further down the table depending on those results. The best-case scenario is for the remaining third-place finishers to end their group stages with no more than three points.
The most favorable outcome for Korea in Saturday's Group H matches — Spain vs. Uruguay and Cabo Verde vs. Saudi Arabia — would be Spain, currently top of the group with four points, defeating Uruguay, who have two points. In that scenario, even if Cabo Verde beat Saudi Arabia, the Group H third-place finisher would end with no more than three points, keeping Korea ahead. The danger scenario is Uruguay winning while Cabo Verde finish with four or more points, sending both through from the group.
Group G then sees Egypt face Iran and Belgium take on New Zealand. Egypt currently lead the group with four points, while Iran and Belgium are tied on two points each in the middle of the table. For Korea, an Egypt victory over Iran would — regardless of the other result — leave the Group G third-place finisher behind Korea in the standings, mirroring the favorable Group H scenario.
Sunday's Group L matches also warrant close attention. Croatia currently sit third in that group with three points and a goal difference of minus-1. The ideal outcome for Korea is Ghana, who have four points, beating Croatia — which would leave Croatia behind Korea on goal difference.
In Group J, the Algeria-Austria match draws particular attention. Both teams, like Australia and Paraguay, have one win and one loss for three points each. Austria sit second with a goal difference of zero, while Algeria are third with a goal difference of minus-2. An Austria win would eliminate Algeria from third-place contention. The scenario Korea least wants is a draw, which would give both teams four points and send them both through to the round of 32.
In Group K, third-place Democratic Republic of Congo face Uzbekistan in their final group match. Congo have just one point, so the best outcome for Korea is either an Uzbekistan win or a draw that keeps Congo's points total unchanged.
