"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has confirmed a late July opening, following Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he navigates a completely transformed life after being erased from the memories of everyone he loves.
Tasked with reviving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" arrives as Marvel's best hope after a string of box office disappointments.
Sony Pictures announced the film will open in South Korea on July 29, two days ahead of its North American release on July 31. The new installment marks the Spider-Man franchise's return to screens five years after "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Set after the events of "No Way Home," the film follows a Peter Parker who has been forgotten by the world. When a mysterious enemy who still remembers his identity appears — and a DNA mutation leaves him with powers beyond his control — he is plunged into deeper chaos, forcing him to confront a new threat to protect those he holds dear.
The Spider-Man franchise has an unbroken box office record in South Korea, and anticipation for the new installment is higher than ever. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017) drew 7.25 million admissions, while "Spider-Man: Far From Home" (2019) and "No Way Home" followed with 8.02 million and 7.55 million respectively — a combined domestic total of more than 20 million admissions across the three films.
Particularly notable was "No Way Home," which surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales just 12 days after opening despite the pandemic, stunning audiences worldwide. Only two other films reached the $1 billion mark faster — both Marvel franchise entries: "Avengers: Endgame" (five days) and "Avengers: Infinity War" (11 days).
Marvel Studios has struggled for some time to break through the wall of "superhero fatigue," and that track record is precisely why "Brand New Day" is widely seen as the studio's strongest card for reviving the MCU. Spider-Man's broad mainstream appeal — unmatched among current Marvel characters — only adds to the expectations surrounding the film.
Lead actor Tom Holland, who has carved out his own chapter in the franchise's history as "Tom's Spidey," has raised anticipation further by expressing confidence in the film. "I believe we've made the best version of a Spider-Man movie that has ever been made," he said.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" opens in South Korea on July 29 and will also screen in premium formats including ScreenX and IMAX.
