Hyundai Elevator's Chungju Smart Campus earns space safety certification

Hyundai Elevator's Chungju Smart Campus has received "space safety certification," a fire department-supervised safety credential. The certification now covers the entire campus, expanded from select areas, recognizing the site's workplace safety management system.

Hyundai Elevator announced Wednesday that the Chungju Smart Campus had obtained the space safety certification, a voluntary corporate safety assessment program supervised by the National Fire Agency and administered by the Korea Safety Certification Institute.

The Chungju Smart Campus serves as Hyundai Elevator's headquarters and its primary domestic production base. Spanning 172,759 square meters, the campus houses an R&D center, sheet-metal and assembly buildings, a logistics facility, and Hyundai Asan Tower — an elevator test tower. About 600 employees work at the site.

The campus operates as a smart factory using an AI vision platform, robots and the Internet of Things, with an automation rate of roughly 80 percent. Workplace safety management and facility operational stability, as well as production efficiency, were among the key areas evaluated.

Hyundai Elevator expanded the certification scope to cover the entire Chungju Smart Campus following the completion of Hyundai Asan Tower. Starting in January, the campus underwent preliminary investigations and on-site evaluations across multiple categories, and was assessed as meeting the standards for a voluntary safety management system.

The campus's safety management system, centered on a safety support office that oversees disaster and accident response, received particularly high marks. The company said the campus was recognized for excellence in operating a smart integrated control center, managing fire safety equipment, proactively preventing disasters and maintaining a voluntary safety management system.

"Creating a safe working environment is a fundamental duty to protect the lives and property of workers, and the starting point of sustainable management," a Hyundai Elevator official said. "We will proactively identify and address potential hazards in the workplace, and work with our employees to further advance our voluntary safety management system."

The space safety certification evaluates 125 items across seven categories. These cover preparedness systems — including safety management and architectural fire prevention — response systems such as fire safety, hazardous materials safety and facility safety, as well as facility performance testing and improvements through new technologies and equipment.

Certified workplaces are eligible for benefits including exemption from comprehensive fire facility inspections and exclusion from fire safety investigations.
