Company says product inhibits melanin production and addresses root cause of pigmentation
Yuhan has launched Melably Cream, a new over-the-counter treatment for skin pigmentation conditions including melasma and freckles that can be used as part of a daily routine.
The cream contains 4 percent hydroquinone as its active ingredient and is designed to gradually improve hyperpigmentation caused by melasma, freckles and age spots, the company said.
Hydroquinone works by suppressing the activity of melanocytes — the cells responsible for melanin production — and blocking tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives melanin synthesis. This prevents new pigmentation from forming while accelerating the breakdown of melanin already accumulated in the skin, brightening the complexion, the company added.
"We have demonstrated the product's efficacy through clinical trials. In a 12-week study involving melasma patients treated with 4 percent hydroquinone, complete disappearance of pigmented spots was confirmed in 40 percent of the treatment group," Yuhan said. "This is a statistically significant improvement compared with the placebo group's rate of 10 percent."
The cream is applied thinly to affected areas once or twice daily. The company said users must apply sunscreen concurrently during treatment due to the nature of the active ingredient, and prolonged continuous use should be avoided.
