A driver died after his vehicle plunged into the sea while he was fleeing a drunk-driving checkpoint.
According to police, a sport utility vehicle driven by a man in his 40s, identified only as A, fell into the water at a national security pier in Dal-dong, Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, at around 8:29 p.m. Friday.
A was rescued in cardiac arrest and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Just before the accident, A had refused to comply with a police sobriety checkpoint and fled.
Even as police moved to block his escape route, A drove through a security fence at the restricted pier facility before the vehicle went into the water.
Police and the Korea Coast Guard are each investigating the exact circumstances of the accident and the cause of A's death.
