Seoul's Seongdong-gu will conduct a "2026 Comprehensive Safety Inspection" throughout July, covering 11,898 disaster-vulnerable facilities and industrial accident-risk workplaces in the district to prevent natural disasters and industrial accidents during the summer season, District Mayor Yoo Bo-hwa said.
The inspection drive began when Yoo signed off on the "2026 Seongdong-gu Comprehensive Safety Inspection Plan" on Wednesday — her first day in office. The move reflects her commitment to making "safety administration" — protecting residents' lives from climate-related disasters and workplace hazards — the top priority of the ninth directly elected district administration.
The 11,898 sites to be inspected include cooling shelters, rainwater pumping stations, construction sites, and streetlights and security lights — all facilities closely tied to residents' daily lives.
By category, the heat-wave segment covers 264 sites: 204 cooling shelters, 56 smart cooling shelters and four children's water-play areas. The heavy-rain segment covers 268 sites, including 30 rainwater pumping stations and drainage gates, nine below-ground pedestrian and vehicle underpasses, 119 flood-prone households, 79 retaining walls and stone embankments, and 31 slopes and parks.
The strong-wind segment covers 11,341 sites — 23 construction sites, 172 outdoor shade structures and 11,146 security lights and streetlights. The industrial safety segment covers 25 sites, including 18 on-site offices and seven cleaning-contract workplaces.
To prepare for heat waves, inspectors will check the operation of air-conditioning units inside cooling shelters and verify water quality and filter performance at children's water-play areas.
For heavy-rain preparedness, officials will confirm the operation of rainwater pumping stations, the flood-barrier systems at below-ground pedestrian and vehicle underpasses, and the proper functioning of flood boards and backflow-prevention valves at flood-prone households. Structural stability — including cracks in retaining walls and slopes — will also be assessed. For strong-wind preparedness, inspectors will check the securing of tower cranes at construction sites and conduct a full survey of corrosion on security-light and streetlight poles.
The district will also look after the safety of outdoor workers directly. Inspectors will focus on whether outdoor workers are following heat-illness prevention guidelines and whether rest areas are properly cooled, with the goal of creating workplaces free of even a single safety incident.
"The reason I reviewed the safety inspection plan first as the ninth directly elected administration began is that nothing is more precious than the safety of our residents," District Mayor Yoo said. "We will not stop at a perfunctory inspection — we will concentrate all of our administrative resources on thorough, field-centered prevention and swift response so that every resident can spend the summer with peace of mind, even amid the climate crisis."
