Trump says Walmart cut prices at administration's request, pressures other retailers to follow

US President Donald Trump said Monday that Walmart, the country's largest retailer, has agreed to cut prices on key household staples at his administration's request, and urged other retailers to do the same. The move is widely seen as an effort to ease voter frustration over high prices ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Monday that he had received word that Walmart — "one of the biggest, best and smartest retailers in America" — would slash prices significantly to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, at the administration's request. He called it "great news."

"In particular, they are planning to reduce the price of one pound (454 grams) of ground beef by almost 15%," Trump said, describing it as "very important" for the millions of Americans who shop at Walmart.

He then called Walmart "a truly patriotic company," adding: "They are stepping up boldly and decisively. Other retailers should follow their lead."

Trump also argued that current high inflation was the result of policy failures under former President Joe Biden, while pointing to recent declines in the prices of oil, eggs and prescription drugs.

The remarks are seen as a direct appeal to voters on the issue of living costs — the top concern heading into the midterms. Walmart, which sells groceries, clothing, electronics and household goods, is considered the retailer where price cuts would be most immediately felt by consumers.

Price stability is regarded as one of the pivotal factors in the midterm elections. International oil prices have stabilized somewhat since the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities last month, but grocery and other everyday prices remain elevated.

The Trump administration has been pursuing a parallel track of tariff and tax-cut policies while also pressing companies to lower prices to ease the burden on consumers. Observers say the Walmart episode could set a precedent, with other major retailers likely to face similar pressure.
