Spain edge Portugal 1-0 on Merino's stoppage-time winner

Spain scored a stoppage-time winner to defeat Portugal 1-0 in an Iberian derby in the round of 16 at the 2026 North America World Cup.

Mikel Merino struck in the first minute of second-half stoppage time Tuesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to send Spain through to the quarterfinals.

Spain, who kept a clean sheet in all five of their matches at the tournament, reached the last eight for the first time since winning the 2010 South Africa World Cup 16 years ago. Portugal, meanwhile, failed to advance past the round of 16 for the second consecutive World Cup. For superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, the defeat brought the curtain down on what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance.

The match drew wide attention as a generational clash between Ronaldo, the 41-year-old living legend, and Spain's 19-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal. In only the third Iberian derby in World Cup history, the two sides came out fighting from the opening minutes.

The nations first met at the 2010 South Africa World Cup, also in the round of 16, with Spain winning 1-0. They met again in the group stage at the 2018 Russia World Cup, drawing 3-3 in a Group B opener. Ronaldo drew particular attention heading into Tuesday's rematch, having scored a hat trick in that 2018 encounter.

After an open and combative first half, both sides turned cautious in the second, each wary of conceding the first goal. Portugal lost left back Nuno Mendes, who had kept Yamal quiet throughout the first half, to injury in the 56th minute, with Nelson Semedo coming on as his replacement.

Spain came close in the 73rd minute when Yamal stepped up to a free kick just outside the right side of the penalty area and whipped a left-footed effort toward the center of goal, only to be denied by the goalkeeper's punch.

Portugal responded in the 76th minute when Bruno Fernandes cut into the right side of the box and fired a right-footed shot that struck the inside of the right post and came out, drawing a collective groan from the crowd.

As tension mounted and extra time seemed increasingly likely, Spain finally broke the deadlock in the first minute of stoppage time. The hero was Mikel Merino, who had come on for Dani Olmo in the 85th minute.

Ferran Torres, himself a substitute introduced in the 75th minute, threaded a killer pass from just outside the penalty arc, and Merino burst into the box before finishing with his left foot — a goal that proved to be the winner.
