Yangyang-gun, known as "the cycling city" for its string of major event wins, opened the 8.15 Celebration 2026 Yangyang International Cycling Championship and National Cycling Championship on Tuesday at Yangyang Cycling Stadium.
The competition runs through Friday and is co-organized by the Korea Cycling Federation, the Korea Industrial Cycling Federation and the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cycling Federation, all at the internationally certified Yangyang Cycling Stadium.
A total of 379 top-level athletes from 89 teams are competing — 327 riders from 69 domestic teams, joined by 52 athletes from 20 overseas teams representing Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China and the Philippines.
Competition is divided into four categories: open men's, open women's, men's under-18 and women's under-18. Athletes will contest 12 track events — sprint, time trial, 1-lap, keirin, team sprint, individual pursuit, team pursuit and scratch race.
Separate para-cycling events in the 1-kilometer time trial and 4-kilometer individual pursuit are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Yangyang-gun has concentrated its administrative resources on providing the best possible environment for the competition, from training camp support through event preparation and operations, aiming to establish the meet as the most prestigious cycling championship in the country.
Local residents and tourists can watch the races free of charge at Yangyang Cycling Stadium, located at 149 Gonghang-ro, Sonyang-myeon, Yangyang-gun, throughout the competition period.
Yangyang-gun successfully wrapped up the KBS Yangyang National Cycling Championships this year and is also set to host the Yangyang County Mayor Cup National BMX Racing Championship.
