England's Henderson faces World Cup exit after freak post-match injury

England veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson (36, Brentford) faces an early exit from this year's World Cup after suffering an unexpected injury.

Sky Sports reported Tuesday that Henderson injured his wrist following England's round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the 2026 North and Central America World Cup and will be unable to play in the team's remaining matches, adding that surgery may be required.

England defeated host nation Mexico 3-2 on Monday at a stadium in Mexico City to advance to the quarterfinals.

England overcame a numerical disadvantage after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and captain Harry Kane converting a penalty for the winning goal.

Henderson did not play in the match. His injury occurred afterward, as he joined teammates in celebrating the victory.

He attempted to vault over an advertising board by grabbing it with both hands, but slipped and fell, landing hard on his left hand and badly injuring his wrist.

Henderson was carried off on a stretcher while wearing an oxygen mask and taken to a local hospital.

England manager Thomas Tuchel said after the match that Henderson had hurt his wrist in the fall, adding, "It looks quite serious."

The England squad has returned to its base camp in Kansas City, but Henderson remains in Mexico City with team support staff.

Henderson has appeared at four consecutive World Cups since the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

At this tournament, however, his only appearance came as a substitute in the final group-stage match against Panama, where he played six minutes.

Against Mexico, he was on the bench but still received a yellow card for vehemently protesting a refereeing decision.

Meanwhile, the Football Association is considering whether to appeal the suspension handed to Quansah for his red card against Mexico, according to the BBC.

Quansah, who started at right back, was sent off in the 54th minute against Mexico after a rough tackle on defender Jesus Gallardo.

The BBC suggested Quansah could face a two-match ban if the challenge is deemed serious foul play.

The report added that the FA is reviewing its options regarding Quansah's punishment in light of the case involving American striker Folarin Balogun, whose suspension was deferred following the intervention of US President Donald Trump.

Trump reportedly asked FIFA to reconsider the one-match ban Balogun received after being sent off for a foul on an opposing defender in the round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

FIFA subsequently made the unusual decision to defer Balogun's ban for 12 months.

Balogun was able to start Tuesday's round-of-16 match against Belgium.

The decision drew fierce criticism from across the football world, including Belgium, UEFA and voices within the United States itself.
