The successful launch of Next-Generation Medium Satellite 4, developed entirely with South Korean technology, is expected to accelerate the country's push to build a digital agriculture and forestry management system capable of analyzing crop yields and monitoring disasters such as wildfires.
The satellite — the fourth in the Next-Generation Medium Satellite program — was developed to secure a standardized platform for 500-kilogram medium-class satellites built with domestic technology, with the aim of producing satellites at scale and transferring the technology to the private sector.
Korea Aerospace Research Institute and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) participated in developing the standard platform technology as part of the program's goal of strengthening space technology self-reliance through domestically led development of the satellite body and key payloads. The effort yielded standard platform technology designed to shorten development timelines and cut costs, with KAI taking the lead on developing satellites 3 through 5 in the series.
Among those, Satellite 3 — a science satellite — was launched in November last year aboard the fourth flight of Nuri, South Korea's homegrown launch vehicle.
Satellite 4 carries an optical payload capable of distinguishing objects as small as 5 meters across a 120-kilometer swath, enabling it to monitor crop conditions, analyze farmland and observe forests.
Its wide-area imaging capability shortens the revisit cycle for any given location, allowing faster access to up-to-date information. The broad observation imagery can be used to assess crop growth and yields and track changes in farmland use, contributing to the development of a digital farmland management system.
Technology for gauging crop conditions through infrared observation and similar methods is already widely used around the world.
The satellite can image the entire Korean Peninsula within three days, making it well suited for precisely monitoring forest damage and ecological changes during wildfires and other disaster situations.
With the program now achieving four consecutive successful launches, export commercialization based on the standard platform is expected to gain momentum. Satellite 4 domestically sourced more than 75 percent of its body and payload components, validating South Korea's independent space development capabilities.
The government aims to leverage the medium satellite standard platform and domestically developed technology to pursue exports to Saudi Arabia, Peru and Indonesia, linking the effort to broader aircraft export initiatives.
