North Gyeongsang Province to open 24 East Coast beaches starting Friday

Twenty-four designated beaches along the East Coast of North Gyeongsang Province will open in stages beginning Friday.

According to the provincial government, four beaches in Gyeongju — Oryu, Najeong, Bonggil and Gwanseong — will be the first to open Friday, operating through Aug. 17 for 39 days.

Eight beaches in Pohang — Guryongpo, Sinchang, Dogu, Songdo, Yeongilttae, Chilpo, Wolpo and Hwajin — will open Saturday and run through Aug. 23 for 44 days.

Seven beaches in Yeongdeok — Jangsa, Daejin, Goraebul, Namho, Hajeo, Obo and Gyeongjeong — and five in Uljin — Nagok, Hujeong, Mangyangjeong, Gusan and Hupo — will open Monday and operate through Aug. 23 for 38 days.

Before the beaches open, the provincial government inspected convenience and safety facilities with relevant agencies, including the installation of shark deterrents and nets designed to block sharks and jellyfish.

"We will work closely with city and county governments, the fire department and the Korea Coast Guard to ensure safe and comfortable beach conditions," said Moon Seong-jun, director of the provincial Marine and Fisheries Bureau. "We also ask beachgoers to follow safety guidelines and enjoy a safe summer vacation."
