Gangwon earns 'excellent' rating for 4th straight year in government disaster management review

Gangwon Province has been named an outstanding agency in the central government's disaster management evaluation for the fourth consecutive year, covering 2023 through 2026.

The Ministry of Interior and Safety released the results of its 2026 disaster management evaluation — based on 2025 performance data — on Thursday, with Gangwon Province again receiving the top rating.

The evaluation assesses disaster management agencies nationwide on their capabilities across the full cycle of disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery, using empirical data as the basis for judgment.

In this year's assessment, Gangwon Province, Gyeonggi Province, South Jeolla Province, North Jeolla Province and Jeju received "excellent" ratings. Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong, North Chungcheong Province, South Chungcheong Province, North Gyeongsang Province and South Gyeongsang Province were rated "average." Daegu and Gwangju were rated "insufficient."

Building on the results, Gangwon Province plans to further strengthen its integrated safety management system between the provincial and municipal governments, expand cooperation among civilian, government and military bodies, conduct more realistic disaster drills, and upgrade its rapid response framework to raise the level of safety that residents can tangibly feel.

Yun Seung-gi, director of disaster safety at Gangwon Province, said the four consecutive years of top ratings reflect the province's commitment to making resident safety its foremost priority and continuously reinforcing a field-centered disaster management system. "Going forward, we will work closely with municipalities and related agencies to build an even tighter safety net," he said.
