NH NongHyup Financial Group is pushing to complete a company-wide AI governance framework by the end of this year.
The group said Thursday it began building a group-level AI governance framework in April to reflect the latest regulatory environment. The plan calls for establishing a group-wide standard first, then tailoring it to the operational needs of each affiliate — including its banking, insurance, securities, capital and savings bank units. The goal is to apply consistent AI usage principles and risk management standards across the entire group.
To support the effort, the group has stood up a company-wide task force drawing on departments covering organization, risk, internal controls, IT and information security. The framework is being designed to work efficiently in practice by strengthening its integration with existing internal control systems.
The group also plans to complete staff education, change management planning and a pilot run to verify the framework — all before year-end — so that employees can put it to immediate use in the field.
Once the group AI governance framework is in place, NH NongHyup Financial will be able to quickly assess regulatory compliance and risk levels through a defined process whenever it introduces a new AI service. With reduced uncertainty and risk from AI adoption, the pace of innovation is expected to accelerate, and customers will be able to use AI services with greater confidence, knowing they have been vetted and verified in advance.
The ultimate goal of the project is to lay a foundation for safe and rapid AI transformation.
"Sophisticated AI governance is not a roadblock to innovation — it is a guardrail that lets us move faster with confidence," a company official said. "On that foundation, we will establish ourselves as a model in the financial sector for adopting AI safely and maintaining customer trust."
Meanwhile, the financial industry's push to build AI regulatory frameworks has been gaining momentum, following the enactment of the AI Basic Act in January and the Financial Services Commission's AI guidelines for the financial sector, which took effect in June. NongHyup Bank is also moving ahead with building an agentic AI-based automated system configuration framework.
