'No one saw this coming': AI actor lands feature film lead, sparking global debate

What once seemed unthinkable has become reality. An AI actor has been cast as the lead in a feature film, sending shockwaves through the global film industry. The actor in question is Tilly Norwood, a UK-based AI performer whose debut last September already rattled the entertainment world.

Norwood's emergence has reignited fierce debate over whether AI can truly replace human actors. Critics and industry workers have been vocal in their concern, warning that the technology will cost performers their livelihoods.

British production company Particle6 has officially announced it has begun production on a film starring Tilly Norwood in the lead role. The film is titled "Misaligned," a feature-length comedy.

Particle6 said the film is being made through a collaboration between film professionals — including directors, writers and editors — and AI engineers.

The studio has set an ambitious goal: to develop Tilly Norwood into "the next Scarlett Johansson."

Norwood said, "I was created by AI, but I'm feeling genuinely real emotions right now. I can't wait to see what happens next."

The film industry, however, has been far from welcoming toward the AI actor's arrival. When Tilly Norwood first appeared before the public, SAG-AFTRA issued a statement condemning the development, saying it would "steal actors' performances, put them out of work, and undermine human artistry."

Even so, the era of synthetic actors has already begun.

The K-drama series "Agent Kim Reactivated," which has been breaking viewership records since its premiere, is also drawing attention for its use of AI technology.

A roughly three-minute sequence depicting the backstory of the show's protagonist — a former special agent known as Kim Bu-jang, played by So Ji-sub — was produced entirely using AI. It marks the first time in K-drama history that a continuous AI-generated sequence of that length, rather than a brief individual cut, has been used in a drama series.

Producing the sequence through conventional means would have cost significantly more. By generating the extended scene with AI, the production cut costs by more than 60 percent. The savings come at a time when drama budgets have been soaring, with lead actor fees reaching 400 million to 500 million won ($332,000) per episode, making AI an increasingly attractive alternative for cost-conscious producers.

Ryu Jae-hwan, vice president of Morpheus Studio, said the key achievement was not simply replacing a few seconds of VFX work with AI, but using it to complete an entire sequence essential to the story's integrity.
