Hyundai E&C, Korea Railroad Research Institute join hands on future rail infrastructure

Hyundai E&C is expanding its research and development in future transportation and logistics infrastructure through a partnership with a national specialized research institute.

Hyundai E&C announced Monday that it signed an MOU with the Korea Railroad Research Institute on July 10 at the institute's headquarters, establishing a mutual cooperation framework for the advancement of rail construction technology and industrial upgrading.

The agreement is designed to strengthen technology development cooperation across rail construction and infrastructure and to accelerate the commercialization of research outcomes. The two organizations plan to build a long-term collaborative framework that includes joint research and exchanges on core infrastructure technologies, as well as shared use of research facilities and equipment.

Hyundai E&C and the Korea Railroad Research Institute will share the latest technology trends in future mobility infrastructure — including rail-grade separation and underground freight transport systems — and explore concrete areas of cooperation from multiple angles going forward.

The two sides also plan to extend their research and development collaboration in future transportation infrastructure, building on the ultra-high-speed hyperloop near-vacuum core technology project in which both organizations are participating. Cooperation will further expand to cover technology verification and demonstration for the commercial application of rail technologies, as well as research and project consulting, education and seminars, and policy exchanges.

"This agreement will serve as an opportunity to further strengthen research and development cooperation aimed at securing future growth engines in the rail sector," a Hyundai E&C official said. "Drawing on our accumulated engineering expertise and on-site execution experience, we will continue to secure core technologies in future rail infrastructure and strengthen our technological competitiveness to proactively respond to the changing transportation environment."

A Korea Railroad Research Institute official said rail infrastructure, as a core component of the national transportation system, requires technological advancement that accounts not only for safety, constructability and maintainability, but also for connectivity with future urban spaces. "Through this agreement, the institute will expand demand-oriented research cooperation with industry to contribute to the practical application of core technologies and the enhancement of national rail technology competitiveness," the official said.

Meanwhile, Hyundai E&C has also been pushing to develop new technologies, recently obtaining green technology certification for a process technology that reduces carbon-intensive construction materials and expands the use of recycled resources.
