KOTRA publishes report on AI adoption trends in US manufacturing

US manufacturers are accelerating the adoption of AI-driven production systems to address reshoring pressures, chronic labor shortages and high wage costs. KOTRA said the AI transformation underway in American manufacturing could open new overseas opportunities for Korean manufacturing AI companies.

KOTRA announced Tuesday it has published a report titled "AI Adoption Trends and Opportunities in US Manufacturing," covering the current state of AI deployment on US factory floors, sector-by-sector case studies and promising entry points for Korean companies.

The report draws on research conducted among Silicon Valley manufacturers, AI companies and investors. While the United States has been expanding investment in manufacturing facilities under the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, a shortage of skilled workers and high labor costs continue to constrain production competitiveness.

In response, manufacturers are moving beyond simple automation toward building AI systems capable of independently assessing and managing production processes. Key application areas include AI vision-based quality control, predictive maintenance, autonomous mobile robots, automated guided vehicles and digital twins.

The report found that manufacturing innovation is evolving away from deploying individual, process-specific solutions and toward integrating operational technology, AI, cloud services and data platforms into unified systems. AI, it concluded, is becoming the core infrastructure that determines manufacturing competitiveness.

By sector, digital twins and AI-powered robotic automation are expanding in the automotive industry, while AI vision inspection and production data integration for yield management have emerged as key technologies in semiconductor factories. In industrial machinery, predictive maintenance is spreading rapidly, and in logistics and consumer goods, autonomous mobile robots and real-time data-driven operational optimization are gaining traction.

KOTRA noted that while US manufacturers are eager to adopt AI, many struggle in practice with compatibility issues between aging equipment and existing systems, as well as a shortage of specialists who understand both manufacturing and AI.

As a result, the report projected growing opportunities for Korean companies in areas such as systems integration connecting legacy equipment with AI, industry-specific AI software, manufacturing data platforms, process optimization solutions, digital twins and autonomous manufacturing solutions.

The report anticipated that the AI transformation of US manufacturing will accelerate further as investment expands in advanced industries including semiconductors, batteries and electric vehicles, and recommended that Korean companies treat the restructuring of the US manufacturing ecosystem as a new market entry opportunity.

Kwon Oh-hyung, head of KOTRA's Silicon Valley trade office, said US manufacturers continue to struggle with on-site implementation and system integration despite their growing AI adoption. "We will link this report to hands-on support programs so that it can serve as a practical guide for Korean companies seeking to understand real demand in the US manufacturing AI market and develop local partnership and market entry strategies," he said.

Meanwhile, KOTRA recently held the "2026 Korea-ASEAN Edutech Day" in Bangkok, Thailand, to expand market access for Korean education technology companies in the ASEAN region, where demand for AI-driven education transformation is growing. The event created opportunities for Korean edutech firms to connect with local buyers and educational institutions aligned with digital transformation initiatives being pursued by ASEAN governments, part of KOTRA's broader support activities across a range of AI-related sectors.
