A recently introduced bill to amend the Gangwon Special Act for the fourth time has been confirmed to include special provisions establishing the legal basis for creating a Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology.
According to Wonju city officials Tuesday, if the bill passes the National Assembly and lays the institutional groundwork for the institute, the city's public and private sectors plan to launch a broad campaign highlighting Wonju's strengths as the optimal location — including its advanced industry base in medical devices, semiconductors and biotech, the Gangwon Research and Development Special Zone, and strong transportation access.
Wonju held an interim briefing at City Hall on Tuesday on a research project titled "Preliminary Feasibility and Location Strategy Study for Establishing the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology in Wonju."
The briefing was organized to share progress on the research project and comprehensively review the policy rationale, site feasibility and differentiation strategies for locating the institute in Wonju.
The research project covers five areas: the policy case for establishing the Gangwon Institute of Science and Technology; an analysis of Wonju's competitive advantages and distinguishing characteristics as a site; a review of domestic and international science and technology institute models; the development of a Wonju-specific growth model and strategic focus areas; and an assessment of candidate sites along with a tailored attraction strategy.
Wonju plans to incorporate results from a public survey into the research project to build civic consensus, strengthen the policy and social case for hosting the institute, and develop an effective strategy to secure the bid.
