The UFC announced the main event and co-main event matchups Tuesday for the Road to UFC Season 5 semifinals, which will serve as the curtain-raiser for UFC Fight Night Shanghai.
Headlining the card is wushu sanda-style lightweight "Super Saiyan" Taiirake Nueraji (25, China), who will compete on home soil and looks to thrill the Shanghai crowd with his trademark finishing ability. His opponent is "Beast Mode" Darius Flowers (31, United States), a powerful finisher known for dominant ground skills.
In the featured co-main event, middleweight Irijati Maimaitijiang (24, China) — a fan favorite in China — will make his UFC debut against striker "TV Time" Treston Vines (30, United States), with another explosive clash expected that night.
The Road to UFC Season 5 semifinals will also feature eight bouts in which Asia-Pacific prospects compete for a spot in the finals, where a multi-fight UFC contract is on the line. Road to UFC Season 5 Semifinals: Nueraji vs. Flowers takes place Friday, Aug. 28, during prime time at the Pudong Development Bank Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China. The opening bout is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The action continues the following day, Aug. 29, with UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs. Song Ya-dong. Bantamweight No. 3-ranked former title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov (30, Russia) faces No. 5-ranked Song Ya-dong (28, China). Preliminary bouts begin at 4 p.m., with the main card following at 7 p.m.
Both UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs. Song Ya-dong and Road to UFC Season 5 Semifinals: Nueraji vs. Flowers are hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and the Pudong District Government. Migu, a subsidiary of China Mobile and UFC China's official partner, co-presents the events alongside Orange Lion Sports, formerly known as Alisports.
