Seoul's Dongdaemun-gu signed MOUs with three new disability-friendly hair salons on Tuesday, expanding access to grooming services for residents with disabilities close to where they live and broadening the district's community-based disability welfare programs.
With the three newly designated salons, the total number of disability-friendly hair salons operating in Dongdaemun-gu has grown from four to seven.
The disability-friendly salon program helps residents with disabilities use neighborhood hair salons more conveniently by improving accessibility at participating venues and subsidizing a portion of the service cost. The initiative reduces the burden of travel and raises the quality of daily life for people with disabilities.
District Mayor Choi Dong-min attended the signing ceremony alongside the owners of the newly participating salons, where all parties pledged to work together to improve convenience for customers with disabilities, raise disability awareness and expand social participation.
"The disability-friendly salon program is a great example of government and community building something together to ease the everyday difficulties faced by people with disabilities, and we will continue to expand it," Choi said. "We will create an environment where everyone can conveniently use hair salons in their own neighborhood, building an inclusive city of Dongdaemun where people with and without disabilities thrive side by side."
The district plans to gather feedback from salon owners and conduct user satisfaction surveys to incorporate on-the-ground input and raise the overall quality of the program. Alongside this, it will work to foster an environment where people with and without disabilities can interact naturally in the community, furthering efforts to improve disability awareness and expand social participation.
