Choo Mi-ae visits flood-prone settlement amid heat wave warnings across Gyeonggi Province

With heat wave advisories in effect across 30 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province, Gov. Choo Mi-ae visited a riverside settlement in Soha-dong, Gwangmyeong, on Tuesday to inspect emergency response systems for the heat and heavy rain.

The Soha-dong settlement, known locally as the "dukbang village," is a cluster of aging homes adjacent to the Anyangcheon embankment, currently home to 13 residents in nine households.

Choo went door to door asking residents how they were managing the heat, whether they were in good health, and what difficulties they were facing.

Residents said the settlement's low-lying location causes poor drainage, and that trucks parked nearby generate noise and dust.

"Gyeonggi Province has a climate insurance program open to all residents, and on top of that I will consult with Gwangmyeong city and the central government on additional support measures for individual households in livelihood crises through special交付 grants," Choo said.

Choo also raised concern over a Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) plan to build a road through the settlement. "If the project goes ahead, the residents here will have nowhere to go, putting their housing rights in serious jeopardy," she said. "I will work closely with Gwangmyeong city to see whether adequate measures to protect their housing rights can be put in place."
