Uljin offers sea, valleys, forests and activities all in one summer family trip

As summer vacation gets underway, families are increasingly searching for destinations that have something for everyone. Uljin-gun in North Gyeongsang Province is drawing attention as one of this summer's top family travel spots, offering children exciting water activities and hands-on experiences while giving parents a chance to unwind in nature.

According to Uljin-gun, the county's greatest appeal lies in how much it packs into a small area — the blue waters of the East Sea, cool valleys, dense forests and a range of activity facilities all within easy reach, cutting down on travel time while maximizing the overall experience.

Gusan Beach, one of Uljin's signature destinations, consistently draws family tourists with its wide sandy shore, clear water and thick pine forest. The pine grove behind the beach provides cool shade even in the height of summer, letting visitors swim and relax at the same time.

Mangyang Beach pairs sweeping East Sea views with a visit to Mangyangjeong, one of the eight scenic spots of Gwandong, making it a popular destination for both sightseeing and beating the summer heat.

Uljin also has an abundance of natural valleys that offer welcome relief from the summer heat.

Buryeonggye Valley, the county's most celebrated natural retreat, is ideal for escaping the heat, with clear water flowing between dramatic rock formations and a dense forest canopy providing shade throughout.

Wangpicheon Stream is another family-friendly spot, where calm, clear water and a wide riverbed let children play safely. The well-preserved ecosystem also serves as a living outdoor classroom for young visitors.

Beyond water activities, Uljin also offers a wide range of hands-on facilities.

Wangpicheon Park brings together a cable car, an aquarium and other attractions in one place, while the National Marine Science Museum offers an engaging and accessible introduction to marine life and the ocean.

Seongnyugul, a natural cave that stays cool even in midsummer, offers a unique way to escape the heat. Jukbyeon Lighthouse Park and the skywalk at Hupo Deungisan Park are also popular spots for memorable moments against the backdrop of the East Sea.

Another point of pride for Uljin is its Korean red pine forest, considered the finest in the country.

The Korean red pine forest trail has been gaining popularity as a destination for barefoot walking and forest therapy. The cool air and phytoncides from the dense woodland make it an ideal setting for both.

The trail serves as a nature learning space for children and a restorative retreat for parents looking to shake off the fatigue of daily life.

As travel trends shift from seeing as much as possible to staying longer in one place, Uljin's appeal is only growing.

A relaxed itinerary is entirely possible here — swimming at the beach in the morning, cooling off in a valley in the afternoon, then rounding out the day with a dinner of fresh raw fish, abalone, octopus and other East Sea delicacies in the evening.
