Mbappé blames midfield imbalance for France's semifinal exit

France captain Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid said his team's inability to hold its own in midfield was the decisive factor in the country's semifinal defeat to Spain at the 2026 North and Central America World Cup.

France fell 2-0 to Spain at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday. Mbappé, who scored eight goals to carry France to the semifinals, saw his dream of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final dashed.

Speaking to reporters immediately after the match, Mbappé said his side was repeatedly outnumbered in the middle of the pitch. "We were constantly in a two-versus-three situation in midfield," he said, according to the Associated Press. "Against Spain, that is fatal. Ultimately, all of that combined to produce this painful defeat."

France deployed Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni as their central midfield pairing, but the duo struggled to contain a Spain engine room built around Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabián Ruiz.

"In terms of tactics, technique and performance, we did not play the game we wanted to play," Mbappé said. "At a World Cup semifinal, if you don't do your job, you can't win."

On failing to reach the final, Mbappé said: "My dream was to reach the final and give the nation a historic moment. Right now, the disappointment felt by the entire squad is beyond words."

He added, however, that the team would not dwell on the loss. "Just as you hold your head high in victory, you must hold it high in defeat," he said. "Football does not stop, and we will use this setback as a lesson and start again."

France will face the loser of the England-Argentina semifinal in the third-place match on Monday. Attention turns to whether Mbappé can get back on the scoresheet and reignite his battle for the Golden Boot against joint-leading scorer Lionel Messi of Argentina.
