'Wild Thing,' carried by Oh Jung-se, heads to Netflix

"Wild Thing," director Son Jae-gon's comedy that drew attention for the bold transformations of Kang Dong-won, Eom Tae-goo, Park Ji-hyun and Oh Jung-se, will be released globally on Netflix later this month.

Netflix announced Wednesday that it will make the film available to viewers worldwide on July 31. The release will include subtitles in 32 languages — including French, Portuguese and Chinese — and dubbing in 15 languages, including English, Spanish and Japanese.

"Wild Thing," which opened June 3, is a comedy about the members of a once-popular mixed-gender group called Triangle, who disband after an unexpected incident and then mount a reckless comeback bid 20 years later.

The film earned strong reviews from domestic audiences for its relentless laughs amid unpredictable situations and the chemistry among its distinctive characters. Kang Dong-won, Eom Tae-goo and Park Ji-hyun reunited as the 2000s dance group Triangle, while Oh Jung-se's scene-stealing turn as Seong-gon — the original "eardrum boyfriend" and ill-fated ballad prince — struck audiences as a refreshing surprise and generated considerable buzz.

Triangle's debut track "Love Is" and Choi Seong-gon's "I Like You," both produced by a K-pop production team, charted on music streaming services, drawing a strong response from audiences beyond the cinema. According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system, the film's final attendance reached approximately 1.33 million.

Distributor Lotte Entertainment said it hopes "to expand the enthusiasm the film generated in domestic theaters into the global market through Netflix," adding that it would be "a great opportunity to show that Korean comedy films can also build a global fandom, transcending cultural barriers."
