The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report Monday at 10 p.m. UTC that a cargo ship had been hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strike occurred about 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Khasab on Oman's Musandam Peninsula, the narrowest point of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been attacking vessels navigating the route that passes close to Khasab, citing illegal passage, after a war-end MOU was rendered void in effect.
UKMTO had received reports of "witnessed explosions" at a similar location on Saturday and Sunday, and an oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile on Friday, sustaining damage to its engine room.
The strike was reported at 1:30 a.m. Iran time Tuesday. Details including the ship's flag, operator and extent of damage have not yet been confirmed.
