Broadcaster Shin Dong-yeop apologizes for remarks seen as dismissing small-theater performances

Broadcaster Shin Dong-yeop has apologized for comments he made on a web entertainment show that were seen as belittling the performance culture of Daehangno, Seoul's theater district.

On Thursday, Shin posted an apology on the community board of his YouTube channel "Jjanhan-hyeong Shin Dong-yeop," writing, "I sincerely bow my head in apology to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my careless words and actions during a recent broadcast of 'Jjanhan-hyeong.'"

Earlier, in a recently released episode, Shin had remarked during a conversation with guests that performers at Daehangno generally do not need to wear microphones because the venues there tend to be small theaters.

The comment drew criticism from theater industry figures and online users, who said it showed a lack of regard for the acoustic challenges of small-stage productions and the hard work of actors and production crews on the scene.

As the backlash grew, Shin offered an explanation, saying Daehangno holds deep and special meaning for him. "I have long felt a profound resonance and emotion watching countless masterpieces at Daehangno, including 'Line 1' and 'Finding Mr. Destiny,'" he said. "That is why I have always held affection and respect for the Daehangno stage and the performing arts."

He then acknowledged the misstep. "However, during the conversation with the cast on air, I got carried away with the jokes being exchanged and ended up making a flippant remark that failed to consider the actual conditions on the scene and the hard work of so many people," he said. "I again sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart to everyone who felt discomfort or was hurt by my thoughtless words."

He added that going forward he would be more careful with his words and actions in any setting, and would always approach the work of those who create stage art with humility.
