Bae Yong-su took office Monday as the 24th deputy mayor of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, the city said.
Forgoing a formal inauguration ceremony, Bae went straight into city business on his first day, attending a senior staff meeting to review the progress of key municipal projects.
A native of Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, Bae graduated from Gyeongan High School before earning a degree in civil engineering from Sungkyunkwan University. He entered public service in 1998 through the third local higher civil service examination.
Bae began his career as a local civil engineering official in Gyeongju and went on to serve as head of the construction and urban affairs bureau of North Gyeongsang Province and as deputy mayor of Gumi. He returned to the provincial construction and urban affairs bureau in 2024 and served as deputy mayor of Andong from January this year.
"Drawing on the administrative experience and expertise I have built up over the years, I will do my utmost to ensure that major projects — including the construction of Yeongilman Bridge and the development of Homibando National Marine Ecological Park — proceed without a hitch," Bae said.
