Suncheon Police Station to run pilot program at Dongsuncheon Nonghyup three-way junction, Donggwang Building intersection and Buyoung 3rd-phase intersection
Suncheon Police Station is moving to overhaul its crosswalk signal system to improve pedestrian safety.
The station said it will pilot a leading pedestrian interval (LPI) system at three intersections where vehicle-pedestrian conflicts are frequent — the Dongsuncheon Nonghyup three-way junction, the Donggwang Building intersection and the Buyoung 3rd-phase intersection.
Under the LPI system, the pedestrian walk signal activates roughly three to seven seconds before vehicles receive a green light to proceed straight through the intersection.
The head start makes pedestrians more visible to drivers before vehicles begin moving, reducing the risk of collisions.
The project was developed in collaboration with Suncheon city. Because it requires minimal cost and delivers strong traffic-safety benefits relative to its budget, the station plans to expand the program to additional locations based on pilot results.
