Chuncheon National University of Education, known for its sculpture park, walking trails and gardens, has been selected for the Korea Forest Service's 2027 climate response fund competition for its "community-integrated forest development project," a program focused on creating outdoor gardens in residential areas.
Two other sites in Gangwon Province were also chosen: an area around Hwadong 2571 in Chuncheon and the Gaetgol living garden in Inje-gun. The government will provide 1.5 billion won ($1.06 million) to develop all three sites.
The community-integrated forest development project aims to plant native species on idle public land and at multi-use facilities near residential areas, while adding rest and amenity spaces. The initiative is designed to address the climate crisis and improve residents' quality of life.
Chuncheon National University of Education was particularly designated as a pilot site under the "program-enhanced" category. Beyond simple green space development, the site is set to become a community living garden that integrates garden spaces with education and hands-on experience programs.
Kim Gyu-ha, director of the forest and environment bureau at the Gangwon Provincial Government, said the secured funding would allow residents to enjoy gardens more conveniently close to where they live. "We will continue to develop community-oriented gardens that reflect the distinct character of each region," he said.
