Agency checks sanitation in military meal manufacturing and distribution chain to ensure food safety and prevent summer foodborne illness
The Public Procurement Service has launched an inspection of the quality and safety of military meals — including ham and sausages — served to South Korean troops.
The agency visited Hifoodtech Co. (CEO Jeong Hwa-jin), a military food supplier based in Geumsan-gun, South Chungcheong Province, on Thursday to conduct a hygiene inspection and hear on-site recommendations from company staff.
The visit came as the risk of foodborne illness and other sanitation incidents rises during the summer months, prompting the agency to examine hygiene management practices throughout the military meal manufacturing and distribution chain.
Public Procurement Service Deputy Commissioner Kang Seong-min visited the facility that day, closely inspecting everything from ingredient storage and cooking processes to the cleanliness of the production floor. He called for thorough and strict hygiene management to ensure not a single safety incident occurs.
Hifoodtech is a processed meat specialist that operates a HACCP-certified production facility built on its own proprietary technology, manufacturing a range of military meal products popular among troops — including ham and sausages.
"We always keep taste and safety in mind when manufacturing our products so that soldiers can eat with confidence," CEO Jeong said. "We will continue working to produce even higher-quality products."
Deputy Commissioner Kang said the agency would further strengthen hygiene and quality management at production facilities to ensure a safe and stable supply of military meals, which he said are directly tied to troop morale. "We will continue to actively reflect the voices from the field in our policy to build a military meal procurement system that our soldiers can trust," he added.
